Preparing for the next phase - new applications for non-CTIMP studies

Last updated on 16 Feb 2026

The next phase in our work to build better research services focuses on building the functionality for users to plan and prepare new research applications for studies that are not clinical trials involving investigational medicinal products (CTIMP) using Plan and Manage Health and Care Research.

We have been working to finalise the service blueprint, map user journeys and start to design the new service.

Finalising the service blueprint
We created a service blueprint - a visual tool that maps out every component of the future service. The blueprint clearly sets out all the users, systems, partner services and processes running behind the scenes to create a single source of truth about how the new service could work.

The resulting service blueprint revealed a clear structure of how applicants move from preparing to submitting applications, along with the barriers they face.

Creating user journey maps
User journey maps are another visual tool to understand the step-by-step experience a user takes when they interact with a service. With the service blueprint as our guide, we’re identifying and prioritising the journeys that matter most. We’ll focus on journeys that are frequently used, often problematic, or could be high impact if improved.

Prototyping
We're using the user journey maps to start to design a new version of each journey. Using a prototyping tool, we can rapidly create interactive forms and flows so we can see how the redesigned experience feels for real users, not just on paper.

What’s next?
We’ll test these prototypes with both internal stakeholders and real-end users. Their feedback will shape further refinements and ensure that improvements truly solve users’ pain points.

We’re always looking for people to volunteer to test our digital services. Please sign up if you are interested in helping us.
