​This information summarise all activities carried out by members of the HRA’s community for the HRA; which are offered payment and how.

​We have completed an HMRC Check Employee Status for Tax (CEST) tool for activities where honoraria are offered. The outcome is recorded in the ‘status’ column.

  • ​REC and CAG member and Chair volunteer agreements can be found on the HRA website.
  • ​activity descriptions and support for HRA staff are saved within the Finance folder on the HRA’s Central Library

Voluntary, no honorarium (expenses offered)

A: REC member

As set out in volunteer agreement:

  • attending appropriate training and education and REC development days including an induction session and Equality and Diversity training
  • attending 6 out of 10 half‑day REC meetings and 3–4 sub‑committees held online
  • reviewing research applications and amendments
  • related preparation (about half a day per meeting) and communication

B: CAG member

As set out in volunteer agreement:

  • ​attending appropriate training and education and CAG development days
  • ​attending meetings and sub-committees
  • ​reviewing research applications and amendments
  • ​related preparation and communication

C: REC vice chair and alternate vice chair

As set out in volunteer agreement, REC member plus:

  • ​take on chairing responsibility for sub-committee work and some Proportionate Review Sub-Committees, in partnership and/or as agreed with the chair
  • ​chair the REC meeting once a year
  • deputise in the absence of the Chair to attend and participate in regional Chairs’ meetings.

D: CAG vice chair and alternate vice chair

As set out in volunteer agreement, CAG member plus:

  • ​chairing meetings / items
  • ​chairing sub groups
  • ​chairing proportionate review applications, amendments and annual reviews via email
  • ​attending Chair’s briefing, review and approve minutes and technical responses to new applications and amendments
  • ​guidance to staff, Committee and applicants
  • ​strategic activities as described

E: Supporting the service

  • attending meetings as a co-opted member
  • ​recruitment and selection of new members and Chairs
  • attending Generic Document Review Committee
