Research summary
This study will measure the impact of a digital distraction intervention on levels of perceived pain and distress in children attending the Emergency Department with a painful condition.
The Zoo is a specially designed intervention which comprises of a film featuring 41 different animals ranging from domestic to wild, and an accompanying small booklet with fun facts about the animals. It is played on 32" portrait screens in treatment cubicles in the Children's Emergency Department at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
We will measure the perceived pain and distress of children aged between 3 and 12 years old who present to the department with a painful condition using observational scales. Children will be referred to a research nurse by the triage nurse and given the opportunity to take part. If a patient and their parent/guardian consent, the patient will be randomised into a cubicle either with or without the digital screen turned on.
We will include 154 participants collecting data over approximately three months. A research nurse will be present for fifteen minutes in the treatment cubicle and will carry out an observation scale to assess pain called a FLACC (Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, Consolability) scale. The nurse will complete the scale again if a certain procedure is done, such as a blood test, however no extra procedures will be done for the purpose of the study. The patient’s participation in the trial will end after they leave the Emergency Department.
This is a trial that aims to identify whether pain can be alleviated in children attending the Emergency Department with painful conditions or in those having certain procedures using a non-medicalised digital Zoo intervention in 154 patients over 3 months.
