Research summary
The aim of diabetes management is to achieve optimal glycaemic control without compromising quality of life (QoL). Minimising the impact of diabetes on QoL is an important objective in its own right but diabetes-specific QoL is also an important factor to help people sustain self-care behaviours in the long term.
Despite the interest in diabetes-specific QoL, a recent systematic review of research evidence identified that many of the questionnaires referred to by researchers as assessing QoL are too generic or simplistic. No measure of diabetes-specific QoL will be fit for every clinical or research situation. It is essential that measures are selected with a clear purpose, whilst considering the suitability, reliability and validity of that questionnaire for the population of interest.
There are currently several questionnaire measures assessing diabetes-specific QoL that have clear evidence of reliability and validity. It is important to establish which of these measures is the most appropriate and effective for the evaluation of diabetes-specific QoL in the treatment of adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Importantly, it is also vital that such measures have good face validity and are acceptable to the people with diabetes.
Therefore, the primary aim of this study is to compare the acceptability, reliability and validity of existing diabetes-specific QoL questionnaires for adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Another key purpose of conducting this study is to inform questionnaire selection for the assessment of diabetes-specific QoL in the forthcoming DAFNEplus randomised controlled trial (RCT). Other primary and secondary endpoints for the RCT have been confirmed but there was no consensus on the measure of diabetes-specific QoL to be used. This study is planned to inform this aspect of DAFNEplus.
