Research summary
Title: Young people's understanding of CBT: Socialisation to the model and its relationship with clinical outcomes.
This study will be asking young people (11-18 years old) who have received cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for treatment of their anxiety or depression about their experience of therapy to ascertain what they learned during the therapy process.
We will use their answers to look at whether understanding the principles that underlie CBT treatment and makes it different from other therapies (i.e. 'socialisation to the model') was important in determining outcomes. Socialisation is something that is recommended as a feature of therapy in practically every CBT textbook but very little research has investigated whether this is an important part of therapy.
We will compare their scores on questionnaires before they started treatment to their scores after to see whether socialisation to the model was an important factor in outcomes. We will also control for the quality of their relationship with their therapist.
Participants will be recruited from child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) via a CBT clinic.
