Research summary
Despite there being a great deal of research within the field of autism, there have been calls for studies to understand the experiences of autistic people through first-hand accounts, as this has been under-researched. Receiving a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is not a single one-off event, but potentially more of a process over time. A small number of studies have explored the experiences of receiving this diagnosis, within groups of autistic participants, however these have predominantly interviewed adults, and there remains a lack of research into young peoples’ experiences of receiving a diagnosis of ASD. Further research into this area could help inform the recommendations that clinicians provide to parents/guardians of how and when to inform young people of their diagnosis, in addition to the post-diagnostic support that is offered.
This study aims to address this gap, by interviewing 9-16year olds with ASD, exploring their experiences of receiving their diagnosis. A semi-structured interview will be developed, and used in interviewing participants. Thematic analysis will be used to analyse transcripts, to help understand the experiences of receiving an ASD diagnosis within this sample of young people.
