Research summary
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought into sharp focus the importance of mental health in children and young people (CYP), with services reporting a substantially increased number of referrals with more complexity. Appropriate support at an early age is key to avoiding the risk of ill mental health in the future. Increasing our understanding of routes to mental health support and services from the users’ experiences is key to ensuring services address their needs as not every person seeking support will be able to access it.
To date, there is little evidence of young people's experiences of seeking mental health support. Furthermore, previous studies have not explored the experiences of young people seeking support from a wide range of services, including those provided by the third sector, schools, and as part of employment benefits, among others. To increase our understanding of the challenges young people experience while seeking mental health support and to identify key barriers and facilitators of diverse mental health services, this study will explore young people’s first-hand accounts of seeking support via a wide range of mental health services in Wales.REC name
