  • Research summary

The aim of the research is to explore young people’s experiences of inpatient treatment for Eating Disorders. The most widely used treatment intervention in the community is Family Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa (FT-AN). However, not all young people respond to this treatment, which can sometimes then result in an inpatient admission.

The research will aim to recruit 6-10 participants from an inpatient service in the Birmingham area. The Anorexia Nervosa treatment pathway will include both FT-AN and Multi Family Therapy (MFT). There will also be additional therapeutic and nursing input as well as a diet plan to enable the young person to restore weight as part of their treatment.

Participants will be required to engage in one semi structured interview, lasting no longer than 90 minutes. A semi-structured interview will see participants guided through prepared topics but allowing for the interviewer to be responsive to the participant. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) will be utilised to analyse the content of the interviews to look for themes. IPA focuses on the sense someone makes of his or her experiences.

There is limited published research exploring young people’s experiences of Eating Disorder treatment so it is felt that this research will provide a greater understanding of the treatment available to young people with an eating disorder.
