  • Research summary

This study takes place as partial fulfilment of the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology with Canterbury Christ Church University. Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is an chronic condition whereby the pancreas produces too little, if any, insulin to regulate blood sugar levels (WHO, 2025), affecting more than 30,000 young people in England as of March 2023 (Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, 2024). Research suggests that times of transition for young people with T1DM can be challenging (Chiang et al., 2021), and that the primary to secondary school transition is more difficult for young people with additional needs (Hebron, 2018). To build on this research, this study’s aim is: from the perspectives of young people with T1DM and their primary caregivers, to what extent is there consensus around the needs of, and beneficial support for, young people with T1DM transitioning from primary school to secondary school? A three round Delphi methodology will be used. Round one will involve two small group discussions to generate statements to be used in the round two questionnaire. In round two, ratings of (dis)agreement to these statements will be noted. Round three will invite participants to keep or change their responses in the context of other participants’ responses. Recruitment and data collection are estimated to take place between March - December 2025. Young people aged 11-16 diagnosed with T1DM who managed their condition while transitioning from primary school to secondary school in England, and their primary caregivers, can take part in this study. Participants will be recruited from Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and potentially also through advertisement on Diabetes UK and/or Breakthrough T1D websites.
