Research summary
For many people sexuality is a central part of who they are yet little is known about how motherhood influences young women's experiences of their sexuality. This study will begin to address the gap in understanding and can be utilised to inform practice when working with populations of young mothers.
The study aims to explore the question:
‘How is sexuality experienced and expressed before and after birth, by young first time mothers?’The study will recruit a minimum of 10 English-speaking participants aged 16-20 years when they became pregnant and who have given birth for the first time within the last 12 months. The recruitment will take place over 24 months in a children’s centre in Stamford Lincolnshire and a Maternity Unit in Peterborough and through a website for young parents. The recruitment period has been set as 24 months as historically young mothers are a seldom heard group.Using qualitative methods of in-depth, semi-structured individual interviews, each participant will be interviewed once for up to 90 minutes. Interviews will take place either at the participant’s homes or in a children’s centre. Interviews will be analysed using a method of data analysis which is compatible with qualitative studies.
