Research summary
This study is about young carers (under 25 years) who provide support to a close family member or friend who is living at home in the East Midlands and who requires help as a result of experiencing a stroke. Young carers in this study refers to young people who take on caring responsibilities, over and above those seen as part of desirable social development within their own culture. Young carers under 18 years are legally children, and protected by specific legislation and policy. Young people aged 18-24 are referred to as young adult carers and are the focus of recent policy and legislation changes surrounding transition between child and adult services. Very little is known about young carers of stroke survivors internationally and there are no studies specifically focussed on young carers of stroke survivors UK.
The study will comprise two phases. Phase one is a questionnaire to all patients newly referred in a two month period to case-loads of all stroke specific domiciliary (home care) care Teams in the East Midlands. The questionnaire will be distributed by the clinicians delivering their care. Phase two (i) will be semi-structured interviews with stroke survivors and their young carers, phase two (ii) will be semi structured interviews with experts who commission or provide services for young carers.
