  • Research summary

At present there is low uptake of cancer screening services by South Asian women. This research aims to increase uptake by increasing awareness of signs and symptoms of bowel, breast and cervical cancer in South Asian women, to support them to set goals to make lifestyle changes and attend screening. Women will be recruited through (1) GPs (2) pharmacies and (3) from within the community. The study will involve 2 phases, the 1st described below.
In the GP surgeries we aim to find out who has not attended screening by looking at patient records so that we target the right population. Women will be sent 2 text messages (2 weeks apart) or a phone call to remind them to attend screening. This will be evaluated through checking follow up letters received from breast and bowel screening services and monitoring cervical screening uptake in the GP surgery.
Pharmacy staff who have been trained as health champions, will identify women when they attend pharmacy and deliver the baseline questionnaire. If women have missed and do not intend to make a screening appointment they will be referred to a community health champion for advice (see below). Women will be referred to the research assistant for a follow up telephone questionnaire 6-8 weeks later to assess whether lifestyle and screening goals have been achieved
In the community, trained "health champions" will deliver the baseline and follow up questionnaire and provide advice to women who have missed a screening appointment.
Data will be examined to evaluate the success of the intervention and whether we may need to make any changes to the intervention to best suit the needs of women in these communities. We will then make any changes we think are needed for phase 2 to find out if the intervention can be improved.
