  • Research summary

This pilot study seeks to compare our newly developed low-cost, low-tech visual field machine (World Sight Foundation Visual Field Machine, WSFFM) to the gold standard machine (Humphrey Visual Field Analyser, HVF) used as part of the standard glaucoma assessment.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness worldwide. It is a disease affecting the optic nerve and is detected and monitored through visual field testing. Unfortunately, lower-income countries often lack the means for testing visual fields (due to cost and specialist maintenance requirements of current machines, especially in rural settings). This means that doctors are limited in their ability to adequately identify patients who may require interventions to preserve vision.

Whilst the WSSM is not as sensitive as HVF, it will hopefully identify moderate/severe disease, thus enabling doctors to identify those who need help earlier – before advanced sight loss has occurred. This will ultimately give glaucoma patients in lower-income countries better opportunities to preserve vision.

Through this pilot comparison of the two visual field machines, we seek to measure how well the WSFFM identifies visual field changes, and ensure ease of use and acceptability.
