Research summary
Hip fractures are the commonest osteoporotic fracture and represent the single greatest healthcare burden in the UK. Hip hemiarthroplasty may be required for those where the blood supply to the head of the femur is compromised. A minority of patients receive a ‘total hip arthroplasty’ (replacing the ‘socket’ of the hip joint as well as the femoral head) if they are particularly active before the fracture, but in most cases only the head of the femur is replaced; a hemiarthroplasty. There remains a debate about which type of hemiarthroplasty gives the best results. This study will explore the clinical effectiveness of two different designs of hemiarthroplasty which are already widely used in the UK (the Thompsons stem versus the Exeter polished taper stem with
Unitrax head.)REC name
