  • Research summary

This is an exploratory study looking at potential benefits and barriers of a novel service to support men with unipolar depression. An initial service framework has been proposed by researcher. This framework is devised based upon theory about what works in this population of interest, and the study is about refining this design. The initial design of the service features men-only peer support conducted using video messaging. Videos will be watched as part of a community pharmacy consultation. It is envisaged this will enable the consultation to be action orientated and aid men in gaining expertise about their medication and condition. This peer support scheme is unique in utilising the community pharmacist expertise and involving them as a facilitator. Pharmacist’s knowledge and skills means they could be an asset in facilitating peer-peer advice and as a referral source issues should they arise.

Eligible participants are males aged 18-65years treating depression (see A13 for details. They are referred to as peer participants) and community pharmacists (referred to as pharmacist participants).

There are three stages to the research.
Stage 1: 1 hour semi-structured interview. To discuss:
-Concerns of Peer participants regarding using antidepressants.
-Initial feedback on the design of potential service (presented as storyboard).

Stage 2: Simulate the proposed community pharmacy service in practice, and then collect feedback data. This involves:
-Producing and watching video messages in consultations.

-A follow up semi-structured interview or focus group collecting feedback data on service, and how to further refine design.

Stage 3: Design refined based upon assessment of Stage 2 data. Re-simulation of refined design as detailed in stage 2.

It is the intention (but not a requirement) that recruited Peer participants have their medications dispensed at one of the pharmacies linked with the study and consider it an accessible location.
