Research summary
This research aims to identify the key skills and competencies for effective working in three new models of care in one UK Vanguard site. It is essential to have the right people, with the right skills and knowledge to deliver high quality care to patients and their families. The new models use a different approach to service delivery, requiring people to work differently, in changing environments and across boundaries. It is important to understand the impact of these changes to inform current and future workforce planning and commissioning of education, so that the care needs of the population can be met cost-effectively. We want to understand where it works well and why and what skills and knowledge staff need.
This study will be undertaken within the geographical area of Sunderland, and the three models are:
• Enhanced Primary Care
• Integrated community teams
• Recovery at home
The research activity will take place at or near people’s place of work or care delivery including primary care, community centres, patient homes, North East Ambulance Service, secondary care, mental health and local authority services. Those eligible to participate are clinical and non-clinical staff and transformational leads within the vanguard. Patient representation groups and service users are included as part of the study to understand their experiences of the change and any information that would affect workforce planning or development. The research is based on action research methodology, as this allows for findings to be implemented as they arise out of the transformational change activity. The study aims to develop a new model of cross sector workforce planning and the creation of a tool for integrated workforce planning.
The study will last for 12 months and participants will be asked to engage with questionnaires, interviews and focus group discussions in person or by telephone.REC name
