Research summary
It is estimated that 1 in 8 women will go on to develop breast cancer with 55,222 women diagnosed in 2014 in the UK;10-year survival rates are approximately 78%. However, around 36% of women in 2014-15 did not attend their first breast screening appointment. This study aims to follow first time breast screeners through their first experience of mammography using a questionnaire to collect data for analysis that may determine whether the experience matched up to their pre-conceived ideas and whether these could be a barrier to attendance. Women will be invited to take part in a follow up telephone interview one week after their appointment to discuss how they feel about their breast screening exam and whether they will attend for their next screening appointment after having time to reflect on the experience. Data collection is expected to last up to three months and up to fifty participants recruited. Data collection may end earlier if sufficient numbers a recruited.
