Research summary
Scarce evidence exists in the UK on the influence of women’s cultural background on their choice of birthplace. An inner-city maternity unit provides care to approximately 6,000 ethnically diverse women. Healthy women with complication-free pregnancies, who do not wish to have a home birth, can choose to give birth either on a traditional obstetric unit (OU) labour ward or on the along-side midwifery unit (AMU), also known as a Birth Centre. This study will explore the perceptions of ‘Midwife-led’ care of culturally diverse women who have risk factors against midwives provisions of ‘Midwife-led care’ within the AMU and OU setting.
