Research summary
Women's narratives of sexuality after stoma surgery for colorectal cancer.
A research project in part fulfilment of a Professional Doctorate in Health.
Sexuality is an important component of quality of life after cancer treatments, yet it remains an under-researched topic (Frankland et al., 2020). This study aims to understand how support services can be developed to meet the needs of women as part of the cancer survivorship programme, promoting women's health and well-being after treatment for colorectal cancer. The study will use qualitative online interviews and photo or visual elicitation to allow women to tell their stories about their lived experiences. The study will be conducted over 12 months. The findings will be used to influence colorectal survivorship programmes, addressing the sexual health needs of women within RWT and national stoma care services.
Research Questions:
1. How do women negotiate their sexuality after stoma formation for colorectal cancer treatment?
2. What do their narratives say about the relations between this negotiation and their wider well-being?
3. What insight does this offer to support the ongoing well-being of women stoma patients? The study will be conducted in three stages to address these research questions.
1. Preparation stage:
This will involve sample identification, participant recruitment, and an introductory meeting (online). This will offer a pre-research briefing to ensure participants are comfortable using the online technology and platform, introduce the research project, the purpose and focus of interviews, and explain the narrative interview task.2. Interview Stage
This stage involves the one-on-one narrative interview with the photo/visual artefact chosen by the participant. The visual artefact will form the foundation for the discussion.3. Validation Stage:
Interview with the participant to offer feedback and reflection on interviews and share the transcript and interpretation with the participant.REC name
