Research summary
Hypnobirthing is a form of birth preparation which uses hypnosis. There is currently a paucity of robust evidence on its impact on adverse effects of primary fear of childbirth or that resulting from a previous negative birth experience. A small evaluation study undertaken at Ayrshire Maternity Unit (Fyfe et al 2012) has shown that hypnobirthing may reduce stress during pregnancy and early parenthood as well as improving the birth experience and reducing the Caesarean section rate. This is a pilot study which aims to provide data to support a larger research study. The study will use
mixed methods, that is qualitative and quantitative data collection. There will be two phases to the research; phase one will administer questionnaires and phase two will take a semistructured interview approach with women who have participated in hypnobirthing sessions.REC name
