  • Research summary

The aim of the study is to explore women’s and families' preferences for psychological intervention as part of the recovery process from postpartum psychosis. As family often play a central role, we wish to explore the experiences of family as well as those of women who have experienced postpartum psychosis.

To help us look into this, we plan to recruit eight women and eight family members through voluntary postpartum psychosis support websites and NHS perinatal mental health services. We hope to recruit individuals at different time points of their recovery, in order a gain a range of experiences.

Any adult who is fluent in English can take part in the research. The interview will be arranged at a time that is convenient for the participant, such as the University of Manchester, their home, hospital clinic or on the telephone.

Taking part in the research will involve completing a questionnaire and semi-structured interview. This will include questions about the types of intervention they found helpful, barriers to their recovery, additional needs they felt were unmet and the role of their family throughout.

All interviews will be audio-recorded, subsequently transcribed and analysed for women and family using thematic analysis. This means that the researchers will look for themes and patterns across all accounts.

It is hoped that the findings will develop our understanding of how to provide better intervention and support across perinatal mental health services, which should lead to positive outcomes for mother, baby and family.
