  • Research summary

This study is a qualitative research project aiming to assess parent preferences for accessing care for Paediatric patients; and whether or not they will choose to use proposed new out of hospital models of care (such as GP/paediatrician models and community children's centres in addition to current options such as out of hours GP practice appointments and pharmacies) instead of the Emergency Department should these become widely available. If not, the study also aims to assess why not and fill gaps in current research such as assessing patient motivators for choosing the Emergency Department specifically in paediatric patients as well as investigating whether or not proposed out of hospital models of care would be used if set up in the community. The benefit of this would be to establish whether or not it is even financially viable to move forward with these proposed plans as part of the NHS England five year forward view and aim to reduce pressure on Emergency Departments created by inappropriate attendances by parents whose children are suitable for simpler models of care. A qualitative study assessing parent opinions is felt to be the best study design methodology to answer this research question.
