  • Research summary

The primary aim of this research is to determine whether parents/guardians of children aged 0-12years who have doctor diagnosed food allergy to dairy and/or egg and/or nuts attending St Mary's Paediatric Allergy clinics will watch web based videos providing "allergy - what I can advice". The secondary aim is to assess whether watching the web based resources improves the quality of life (QOL) and/or confidence scores and/or anxiety levels of the parent/guardian. Study participants who meet the inclusion/exclusion criteria and agree to take part will be randomised to either group 1 or group 2. group 1 will immediately get access to the web based video/s whereas group 2 will not get access until they have completed their second Health Related Quality of Life HRQL questionnaire, confidence tool and anxiety questionnaire. Both groups will be asked to complete a validated health related quality of life (HRQL) questionnaire, confidence tool and anxiety questionnaire before and a maximum of 44 days after watching the web based video/s. Three videos will be filmed providing product education on how to avoid dairy and/or egg and/or nuts providing information on what you can eat. Product education on avoiding dairy, egg and nuts was selected as the results of a preliminary survey of 100 patients/families attending St Mary's Allergy clinics rated this topic and these foods as their preferred option. Each video will be 10 minutes or less in duration as per the survey findings. A text or e-mail reminder, depending on the participant's preference, will be sent to study participants on days 5, 8 and 12 to remind them to watch the video/s. Similarly a prompt will be sent reminding participant to complete their second HRQL questionnaire, confidence tool and anxiety questionnaire at days 10, 20 and 25 after watching the videos.
