Research summary
A team in Southmead hospital in Bristol have developed a quality improvement programme for maternity services (PROMPT), based around multi-professional practical training. PROMPT has been associated with improved culture and evidence-based practice in Southmead, and reduction of preventable harm to some of the lowest reported rates in the world. While there is evidence for the success of PROMPT in Southmead and other selected pilot sites, there is a need to understand the ways in which it contributes to improving safety, and the factors critical for success, in order to inform efforts to roll the programme out at scale. This qualitative study aims to generate a fully theoretically-informed description of the PROMPT programme, how it works, and what features of the setting are necessary for it to work well.
