Research summary
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is an increasing health problem worldwide. The increase in T2DM is related to the increasing prevalence of obesity. The most effective treatment for obesity and diabetes is weight-loss surgery (“bariatric surgery”). However, only 4 in 10 patients who have diabetes before surgery see a full remission of their diabetes, i.e. their blood sugar levels remain at normal levels without any diabetes treatment.
This study aims to investigate which factors predict diabetes remission following surgery and what might be the underlying mechanism by which remission occurs.
A team at Imperial Healthcare NHS trust will study diabetic patients before and after bariatric surgery and also a control group of lean non-obese participants.
We will assess
1. the pattern of fat distribution in the body
2. the presence of genes that influence the risk of diabetes and the deposition of fat
3. the response of hormones produced by the gut to a standard meal
4. changes in genes activated following surgeryFurthemore, the information will be used to construct a computer ‘tool’ to predict who will benefit from surgery
