Research summary
The World Health Organization (WHO) is currently updating its International Classification of Diseases (ICD) from version 10 into ICD-11. This study aims to examine consequences of the proposed changes with regard to the classifications; from Gender Identity Disorder in Childhood (ICD-10) to Gender Incongruence in Childhood (ICD-11); and from Transsexualism (ICD-10) to Gender Incongruence in Adolescence and Adulthood (ICD-11). Furthermore, it aims to assess the clinical utility, feasibility and inter-rater reliability of the newly developed criteria for Gender Incongruence in specialist gender identity clinics in the UK. In line with these aims, the study will consist of three parts:
1. A qualitative survey of service users (past, present and future; 'the trans community') and clinicians to elicit opinions regarding the anticipated impact of the changes.
2. A qualitative study on the childhood diagnosis via focus groups of parents of adolescents who were referred and diagnosed in childhood with a Gender Identity diagnosis.
3. A study on clinical utility and reliability with gender specialists evaluating videotaped interviews.REC name
