Research summary
Background
Individuals with severe mental health problems such as psychosis, who are also in contact with forensic services often present with multiple complex problems. It is important to consider the impact these might have on the individual themselves but also their carers. Research has suggested that there are a number of factors within the home environment that can impact on rates of relapse. There have been a number of suggestions as to what the mechanisms for this might be. Having a better understanding of these mechanisms could help to develop family interventions and in turn improve the wellbeing of patients and carers.
Aims
This study aims to investigate the experiences of caregiving from the perspective of mothers’ of forensic mental health patients, specifically how they make sense of their experiences, roles and relationships.
Methods
Semi structured interviews will be undertaken to investigate mothers’ experiences of caregiving. Interviews will last around 1 hour. The interviews will be recorded and transcribed word for word, with all patient identifiable data removed. Recordings will then be destroyed. The transcribed information will then be stored according to NHS and University of Glasgow Data Protection Policies. The transcribed information will be analysed according to the guidelines of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.
Participants
Participants will be mothers’ of patients within relevant NHS Boards Forensic Mental Health Teams and mothers who have sons or daughters seen within Forensic Mental Health Teams who are in contact with the mental health charity, Support in Mind Scotland.
Impact Strategy
The aim of this study is to develop a more in depth understanding of the experiences of the mothers who care for sons or daughters supported by forensic mental health teams. The findings may contribute to the development of family interventions, such that caregiving experiences are considered in more detail.REC name
