  • Research summary

Having staff with the right knowledge and skills to deliver good dementia care is a key government priority. In the current study we aim to identify the elements of effective approaches to dementia training and education. The study has 3 work packages (WP): a literature review of published evidence on what makes an effective educational programme (WP1). An online survey of organisations who provide dementia training to find out what is provided nationally followed by an online survey with staff who have undergone training to explore their experiences of training, knowledge gained and attitudes towards dementia (WP2). Work package 3 will use a mixed methods case studies to evaluate the factors associated with success in 12 sites whose programmes seem to be particularly effective. This application relates to WP3 only.

12 case study sites will be selected on the basis of indications from WP2 that they are offering successful training and education. The case studies will explore each organisation's training approaches, and the impact these have on staff knowledge and skills, and on the quality of care received by people with dementia and their family members who use the services. Training providers and direct care staff will be asked to discuss their experiences of training and its implementation in focus groups or interviews. Staff receiving training will complete questionnaires on their dementia knowledge and attitudes and factors which affect using training in practice. The care experiences and satisfaction of people living with dementia and family members will be explored using simple survey cards, one to one interviews and observation. Realist evaluation will be used to describe and track the process from training to outcomes, and an evidence-based checklist (developed during WP1) of effective components of training will be used to assess the quality of training at each site.
