Research summary
What
This study is developing, with the help of women’s engagement, a short, illustrated book communicating core information about pregnancy and birth. We aim to determine the intended and unintended effects of the distribution of the book for different groups of women. Why
Women consistently report they want multiple formats, including paper-based information and pregnancy and birth. They also want content to reflect actual NHS maternity care. Our engagement work with local communities in Liverpool suggests there is a need for information about pregnancy and birth in a short format with few words and more illustrations. How
The study has two parts. Developing the book. Evaluation of the book via three short surveys and a qualitative focus group (or interview option for anyone reluctant to speak in a group).Who
We will recruit 500 pregnant women to obtain 100 linked questionnaires (antenatal and postnatal) and up to a maximum of 40 participants in focus groups (4 groups with 8-10 participants) or individual interviews.Impact
The outcome we seek is a short, illustrated book, to sit in the University of Liverpool’s Birth-Options suite of information materials. We will also foster stronger links with local, hard-to-reach communities and enhance on-going commercial partnerships.REC name
