Research summary
This study aims to evaluate how patient-related factors affects patients who undergo a Dental General Anaesthetic (DGA). This also aims to assess the patient-related factors that increase the risk of children requiring a DGA. I will be focusing on specific patient-related variables including the patient’s age, gender, the effects of weight using the Body Mass Index (BMI), socioeconomic factors (Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation), anxiety scores (using the Modified Child Dental Anxiety Scale with Faces {MCDASf}) and the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale {MDAS}, ethnicity and significant medical history. Patients under the age of 16 who require a DGA from one of two sites in Lothian region of Scotland; Edinburgh Dental Institute (EDI) and Howden Community Dental based at St. John’s Hospital, Livingston will be eligible to take part in the study. This study will last for approximately three months and data will be collected prospectively using a questionnaire to be given to the parent(s)/legal guardians of the children who require the DGA.
This project aims to help inform where efforts may be put in the future to help reduce the number of children having a DGA.
