  • Research summary

This study aims to explore the issues which influence older women with breast cancer when making decisions about their surgery. The study involves interviewing women who are undergoing either mastectomy or mastectomy and reconstruction during the period of time after diagnosis and before their surgery. They will be asked open ended questions relating to 5 specific areas which may be important to them when looking at their surgical options. These include function and general health, impact on family and friends, cosmesis and body image, financial issues and social role and the implications for additional treatments. Interviews will be recorded and analysed for recurring themes. A focus group discussion involving older women without a personal or family history of breast cancer will be used to provide additional perspective.
