  • Research summary

Frozen shoulder is a debilitating physical condition causing pain and stiffness of the shoulder. This can last from eleven months to over four years. It is estimated to affect 2.4/1000 head of the population making it a disease of significance due to the large number of sufferers and the health care costs involved. Studies have previously focused on understanding why this condition occurs, what it does to the body and what treatments might be effective. Little is understood of what it is like to live with frozen shoulder from the individual's perspective.

This study seeks to answer this question by interviewing people with frozen shoulder who attend assessment clinics for shoulder pain at the Bognor War Memorial Hospital site in West Sussex. Persons identified as having frozen shoulder will be invited to attend an individual face to face recorded interview to discuss what it is like to live through the experience of frozen shoulder and what was meaningful for them. The interview will last approximately one hour.

Transcripts from the interview will be analysed to draw out common themes and differences between participant experiences and use these to generate key findings and conclusions. This information can be used to feed back into improving the healthcare experience for people suffering this condition and inform further research.

The study will be completed within two years as part of a clinical master's in research degree under the University of Brighton.
