  • Research summary

Abdominal wall hernia is a common condition, which causes symptoms of abdominal pain and discomfort. Hernia, particularly Complex Abdominal Wall Hernia (CAWH) are becoming increasingly common and studies have shown that it may affect patients emotionally as well as physically.

Complex Abdominal Wall Reconstruction is an expanding field of General Surgery that delivers advanced, specialist treatments to patients with CAWH. However, despite these advancements patients often have to wait for their elective procedure or, in certain circumstances, they are told they may not be able to have an operation. As such, many patients live with their hernia for a long time, sometimes on a background of multiple health problems. This, undoubtedly, has a huge impact on quality of life.

Quality of life and patient experience of CAWH has been poorly investigated. To our knowledge, there are currently no studies which assess patient experience of CAWH.

The aim of our study is to explore patient experiences of their complex hernia prior to their operation and therefore, provide much needed insight into how CAWH affects patient quality of life. This research will help develop a specific complex hernia patient questionnaire. This is unique because it will be the first questionnaire generated specifically for complex hernia patients that will be validated by the patients themselves. Such a tool will ultimately personalise surgical care.
