Research summary
The ‘what goes in must come out’ model is a simple method of helping patients to develop a deeper understanding of their psychological state of mind, thus hopefully improving their adherence to therapy and well-being. It was first presented as a poster to the RCGP Annual Conference (See attachment) It has shown anecdotal value with its use in clinical settings, but it has never been formally evaluated. This research aims to do just that.
The ‘what goes in must come out’ model is delivered via a series of pictures that can either be manually drawn or presented in a digital format, such as through Microsoft PowerPoint.
This is a medical undergraduate student research project led from a general practice, supervised by an experienced GP but undertaken within the voluntary sector with a contract to the NHS. ‘Self-Help’ (SH) have agreed to conduct the research. Self Help is a user-led mental health charity that delivers a range of primary mental health care services across Greater Manchester for people experiencing common mental health difficulties. The project has been set up as a series of steps. This is to allow the subsequent step to be mindful of the experience from the previous. These are:-
1. The training and feedback of the Psychological Well-being Practitioners (PWP), henceforth to be referred to as the Professional Participants
2. Delivery of the model, with subsequent feedback, to the attendees of the drop-in groups, henceforth to be referred to as the ‘drop-in patient participants’
3. Delivery of the model, with subsequent feedback, during a clinical therapeutic session to individual patients, henceforth to be referred to as the ‘clinic patient participants’
From their responses of the patient participants and the experiences of the clinicians using the tool, an evaluation will be made. Ethical approval is being sought for all steps as one project to allow flow between the steps.REC name
