  • Research summary

Dental decay is the most common chronic disease in childhood despite being largely preventable. It is important to explore the parent’s perception on dental decay as they play an important role in decision making for the child.
The Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ) is a calibrated, pre-tested questionnaire which will be used to test parents’ perceptions on dental decay.
    Aim
1.To assess the perceptions of dental decay in parents with children who
require dental extractions under general anaesthesia.
2.To assess if there is any merit in taking this project further with a larger
    sample size.

    Method :
Type of study : Preliminary/pilot study using a survey design
    Sites :
New patient clinic, Department of Paediatric Dentistry, King’s College Hospital, Denmark Hill.
    Sample :
A convenience sample of 80 parents whose child is undergoing dental extractions under general anaesthetic will be recruited. The parents will complete a questionnaire which is anonymised with an ID issued to each participant, the only information collected is age, gender and child’s ethnicity as well as age, gender and parent’s years of knowledge. The number of teeth planned for extraction as well as postcode of the permanent address of the participant will all be noted based on the case notes.
Postgraduate student's role : recruiting and consent, be on hand to answer any questions the parent may have regarding the study and collecting and analyzing the data.
