Research summary
Summary of Research
My research is investigating what are the required skills of an artist to effectively complement and work within a healthcare setting. In BCUHB (Betsi Cadwaladar University Health Board), artists may have attended a generalised training programme but there is currently no form of standardised BCUHB training for artists wishing to work in healthcare. This research, therefore, aims to enhance provision in BCUHB by collecting opinions from artists, healthcare workers, patients and professionals (whose work correlates with the field of Arts in Health) to attain a multi-perspective opinion on what constitutes good practice and thereby what artists need. The data collected will be filtered into a specific skill set and job profile as well as aid in the production of a form of training for artists to attend so that the quality of Arts in Health intervention in BCUHB will improve and employers will have confidence in the artists ability to work creatively, safely and appropriately.
Summary of Results
The research aimed to understand artistic practice in healthcare contexts. Originally focused on what training was required, the research developed into an exploration of practice - specifically, eight artists working under the employment of BCUHB. Using semi-structured interviews with these artists (and ethnographic observations of an ongoing project), the research sought to extrapolate common characteristics across the variety of practice in order to develop a model or framework. The research helped develop critical language around artistic practice in this interdisciplinary field, as well as further understanding of the interrelation of practice components.
