  • Research summary

Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract. It is extremely debilitating, often requires gastrointestinal resection to remove diseased bowel and has a negative impact on nutritional status. As part of routine clinical practice at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, patients with Crohn’s disease undergoing gastrointestinal resection will have a comprehensive assessment of their nutritional status. Following ethical approval, we propose a prospective study to assess the nutritional status of patients with Crohn’s disease (surgical and non-surgical), patients with ulcerative colitis (surgical and non-surgical), and healthy controls to compare and to determine whether there are any specific aspects of nutritional status that are compromised in patients with Crohn’s disease undergoing gastrointestinal resection.

Current National and International recommendations advise that nutritional assessment is carried out on all IBD patients. Despite this, there is no study comparing the subtypes of patients (surgical compared to non-surgical) we aim to enrol. Therefore we hope this study will provide valuable information both to justify the recommendations, and to provide further information with respect to prevalence of abnormalities.
