Research summary
The aim of this research is to develop an assessment tool devised by children and young people who stammer in the UK, regarding the child's perception of stammering and the impact that it has on their day-to-day functioning. This questionnaire will then be able to be used in collaboration with other assessments to gain a full profile of the individual prior to speech and language therapy, and to measure their progress over time.
Participants in the study will be children and young people aged between 7-14 years old who are currently on the caseload for speech and language therapy at The Michael Palin Centre. Basic demographic data, including factors which could have an influence on their statements and their ratings, will be collected from the participants. A Delphi approach will be used, whereby participants will be sent a research question to which they are encouraged to respond with several statements. The researcher will then summarise and categorise these statements, which will then be sent back to the participants for them to rate each one on a 5 point Likert scale. The researcher will calculate the mean, median and standard deviation of the ratings for each of the statements. Any statements with a mean below 3 will be eliminated. Following this, statements with the smallest standard deviations will be considered to have the greatest consensus and will be retained.
