  • Research summary

WeReha is an innovative device for the home rehabilitation of stroke patients developed within the scope of the EU funded project MAGIC-PCP (www.magic-pcp-eu). WeReha is a system that allows patients to perform exercises in a home environment with remote supervision as an integration to regular rehabilitation. The product is based on the principle of biofeedback guided rehabilitation, designed to stimulate muscle recovery and to contribute to a more effective and more motivating rehabilitation.

WeReha presents the patient a series of rehabilitation exercises in the form of interactive games, driven by body movement captured by a wearable wireless and light sensor. The device includes also hand specific movements with 3D printed ergonomic objects that with the sensor become "smart": moving these objects to simulate real-life tasks, the patient will be playing simple video games that stimulate motivation and engagement and help recover.
The exercises assigned to perform at home are at the discretion of the physician who is caring for the patient and might require the presence of a caregiver.
A session with WeReha always starts with a questionnaire through which the software understands the patient's health conditions and the presence or not of a caregiver throughout the session. Based on these responses, the software adapts the daily session to minimise risks of fall while maintaining a high level of rehabilitation to reach the patient goals.

The goal of this study is to investigate the applicability of an innovating technological product such as WeReha to the home rehabilitation of stroke patients as an integrative solution to a conventional exercise program and to assess its acceptance also by the caregivers and clinic professionals. Patients will be proposed to use WeReha for their home rehabilitation in addition to traditional treatments for up to 12 weeks.
