  • Research summary

Accurate reference ranges are essential for the correct interpretation of laboratory results, to illustrate what is "normal" and what is "abnormal" or may need further attention. All laboratories must periodically review their reference ranges to ensure they are appropriate for use. The appropriate reference range can vary significantly depending on age, gender, ethnicity and assay platform. Multiple other factors can also affect results and should be accounted for whenever possible - e.g. medications, comorbidities/general health. These factors are not necessarily well known.
Wales in general has harmonised many reference ranges, e.g. as per Pathology Harmony recommendations. Others remain unharmonised. It has previously been shown that some existing reference ranges may not be suitable for use. This work will attempt to assess whether existing ranges are appropriate.
