  • Research summary

Wellframe Inc. has developed a platform for patient engagement and education, with the goal of improving quality of care. The Wellframe Platform consists of a mobile application (App) and a clinician dashboard. The App has several features including messaging between clinical staff/technical support staff and patients, reminders to patients to engage in health behaviours (e.g. take medication), interactive surveys, educational articles, and encouragement. The clinician dashboard allows for staff at the clinical site to remotely monitor the patient’s responses to the App and can even alert staff to potential issues with the patient.
Smith & Nephew recently engaged Wellframe to adapt their platform for use as a potential research tool. Wellframe has added patient reported outcomes to their platform with the hope of reducing burden on research subjects and, in turn, increasing compliance and reducing loss to follow-up. Specifically, Wellframe has added the Patient Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Computer Adaptive Tests (CATs).
The purpose of this feasibility study is to determine if the adapted Wellframe Platform for the collection of PROMIS CATs is acceptable to total knee arthroplasty (TKA) subjects. This will be assessed by examining completion percentages of the PROMIS CATs, as well as the quality of responses, and overall engagement of subjects with the App. Results from this feasibility study will be used to further refine the App and to design future studies that can check whether this PROMIS outcome gives similar output to measure to report patient outcomes that are already used, eg the Oxford Knee score.
