  • Research summary

People with severe mental illness (SMI) have greatly reduced life expectancy compared to the rest of the population, of 15-20 years depending on gender and diagnosis. Among other causes of this disparity, a contributing factor is poor access to primary care for physical health needs for people with SMI.
This project draws on peer-led and peer co-facilitated interventions in the United States to improve self-management of physical health and increase uptake of primary care services and aims to develop a similar intervention to improve access to primary healthcare services for people with SMI who have been recently discharged from secondary care mental health services.
Participants will undertake 5-6 sessions of support based on network mapping, a process of identifying an individual's beneficial networks or support systems in order to empower them and signpost them to opportunities locally and build connections to people, places and activities.
Participants will complete baseline and 3-month follow-up outcome measures and undertake a follow-up qualitative interview. The peer support workers providing the intervention will also complete a qualitative interview of their experience.
Clients will be compensated £10 for each of their baseline and follow up interviews and £15 for focus group participation, reflecting their time spent for each.
This is a non-randomized pilot study aimed at development of an intervention and understanding of behavioural processes and thus does not qualify as a clinical trial.
