Research summary
Obesity is a major problem at both a local and national level. Its associated co-morbidities present a challenge to health services worldwide. There are global initiatives to try to tackle this growing issue. However, being underweight is also an issue for many hospital inpatients and it is important to understand patients perceptions about their weight in general in order to support their successful engagement with weight management programmes and to plan appropriate services.
This project will study hospital inpatients, and aims to examine patient perceptions of their weight, its effect on their health, and evaluate knowledge of and access to weight management programmes. We also aim to examine what motivates people to try to optimise their weight, and which barriers they encounter along the way.
This is a 50-patient pilot study to assess study design and feasibility for a larger study in NHS Grampian.REC name
