Research summary
Obesity has by far become one of the most serious public health concerns. It is well documented that those who are obese tend to have other health related problems and managing these other health problems can be challenging unless the individual can lose a significant amount of weight.
Obesity is a well-documented risk factor for joint disease with many patients needing knee replacements. We propose the idea that obese patients with knee pain should be offered bariatric surgery because the cost of these surgeries are comparable and because bariatric surgery has the potential to make a difference to other obesity related health problems such as diabetes and cardiovascular risk.
Prior to conducting such a trial there is the need to carry out come qualitative work to explore patient perceptions, beliefs and barriers towards a trial comparing bariatric surgery and total knee replacement surgery. We will invite patients from a local orthopaedic department who have knee pain and a body mass index of 40 and over to take part in a one to one interview with a research. Interviews will be conducted either by phone or at a mutually agreeable location. Interviews will last a maximum of 60 minutes and will be recorded with the patients consent.REC name
