Research summary
In this research study, we aim to explore the impact of weight loss via diet or gastric surgery on gum inflammation.
Obesity has been linked to gum inflammation. The connection may be explained by the production of inflammatory markers from fat cells which leads to a low inflammatory status in the body. This subsequently effects the health of the gums. Hence, it is reasonable to suspect that there might be an association between weight loss through surgery or diet and gum health.
Similarly, individuals undergoing gastric surgery in the form of sleeve gastrectomy or are enrolled in a 12-week low-calorie diet prior to surgery at UCLH Center for Weight Loss, Metabolic and Endocrine surgery are eligible for this study.
Weight loss through bariatric surgery vs diet both are known to improve markers of inflammation in the body with systemic effects sometimes varying. A previous pilot study conducted at UCLH showed improvement in gum inflammation following weight loss, however little is known about the effects of bariatric surgery on gum health in comparison. Therefore, we are interested to assess differences in gum health before and after weight loss and/or bariatric surgery.REC name
