Research summary
This is a qualitative study to evaluate a website designed to help men with incontinence select products suitable for their needs.
An existing website, the Continence Product Advisor (CPA, www.continenceproductadvisor.org)has been refined with the help of men who need continence products; product information has been improved and functionality has been added to the site. Furthermore a prostate cancer microsite has been added to the CPA which is intended to support men with incontinence as a consequence of prostate cancer treatment both before and after their treatment.
The research is important as good quality information which specifically addresses men's needs is essential to enable them to make informed decisions about planning for incontinence and managing it when it occurs. In this study men will be recruited from urology outpatients and groups of men already known to us who have worked on other parts of the continence management programme. We may also recruit men through cancer support groups. Men are eligible if they are incontinent, or have been incontinent, having had treatment for prostate cancer. Men are excluded if they have assisted with the development of the site or are in the terminal stages of their illness.
The study will last 5 months. Men will provide feedback about the website using self-completion questionnaires, semi-structured interview and direct observation of website use. Data collection will take place at the University and/or in the men's homes.
