  • Research summary

The aim of this study is to assess the feasibility of a randomised controlled trial examining the effectiveness of a six-month web-based physiotherapy programme plus usual care compared to usual care alone, in people moderately affected by MS and to gather essential information for the planning of a definitive trial, which would evaluate both clinical and cost effectiveness of the intervention.

The study will recruit 90 people with MS (pwMS) from three UK Centres (30 from each centre); NHS Ayrshire and Arran, NHS Lothian, and Plymouth. Potential participants will be informed of the study and provided with an invitation letter and participant information sheet. Potential participants who are interested in taking part will be screened for the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Written informed consent will be obtained from those who agree to take part in the study and meet the inclusion/exclusion criteria and baseline assessments will be completed. Participants will be randomised to receive web-based physiotherapy or control(usual care) and will undergo a physiotherapy assessment in order to prescribe an individualised exercise programme. Participants receiving web-based physiotherapy will follow their exercise programme over the internet, www.webbasedphysio.com, for a six month period. Those randomised to receive control (usual care) will be provided with a sheet of exercises. All participants will be advised to complete their programme at least twice per week. Study assessments will be undertaken by blinded assessors at baseline, 3 months (midway), 6 months (post intervention) and 9 months (follow up).
