Research summary
Exercise is important for people with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). However, people of south Asian backgrounds, find it difficult to exercise due to barriers such as work and lack of gender specific exercise classes. Using the Internet to deliver web-based exercise programmes instead of traditional face-to-face classes may help South Asians with T2DM to overcome these barriers and consequently engage in exercise.
This study aims to:
• Investigate the effect of a 12 week personalised exercise programme delivered using a web-based platform, compared to usual care, on glycaemic control, muscle strength, functional ability, blood lipid profile, blood pressure and quality of life in adult South Asians with T2DM.
• To explore any change in these outcomes 8 weeks after the completion of the intervention.
• To explore the views of participants in the intervention group on the web-based intervention.40 Participants will be randomised to receive web-based exercise or control (usual care). Participants receiving webbased exercise will be asked to follow their exercise over the internet, www.webbasedphysio.com, for 12 weeks. People randomised to receive control will be asked to continue their normal medications and lifestyle. They will also receive a leaflet about T2DM management written in either English or Urdu.
All participants will be assessed by a blind assessor before randomisation (week=0), after the end of the exercise programme (week=12) and 8 weeks after the end of the exercise programme (week=20). The following outcome measures will be taken: blood samples for glycaemic control and blood lipids, resting blood pressure, body mass index, waist circumference, muscle strength, functional mobility and quality of life. In addition, demographic characteristics, medical history, food intake, internet and medication usage will be also recorded. Sub-sample of participants in the intervention group will be interviewed at week 12 to explore their views of the intervention.
