Research summary
This qualitative study aims to explore the reasons for non-response of potential participants to the WAVE randomised controlled trial.
It consists of semi-structured interviews with patients and primary care practitioners, and a focus group with CRN staff. If CRN staff are unavailable for a focus group they will be offered the opportunity to take part in an interview instead. We will seek to understand experiences and perspectives of recruitment issues to the WAVE trial, identify potential reasons for low recruitment and identify what could be improved for future trial recruitment. In addition to being interviewed, patients will be offered the opportunity to complete a short anonymous questionnaire regarding their reasons for not responding to the invitation to participate in the WAVE trial. Whilst this is an addition to the interview, patients can also choose to complete this questionnaire even if they do not wish to be interviewed.
Participants will form three groups:
• Patients who were invited to the WAVE trial but were non-responders.
• Primary care practitioners, e.g. GPs, practice nurses, at general practices
recruited to the trial.
• CRN staff from the three CRNs who supported the trial.
Participants will be recruited with the support of NIHR Clinical Research Networks (CRNs) West Midlands, South London, Wessex.
The study will be conducted between September – November 2024.REC name
