Research summary
This study aims to investigate whether hospital wastewater can be used to monitor antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in NHS hospitals. Investigators will collect paired hospital-level wastewater samples and microbiological isolates from cultures collected during routine patient care and assess the correlation between AMR found in the wastewater and AMR detected in patient samples. If a significant correlation is established, the findings will support the deployment of wastewater surveillance as a cost effective method for monitoring AMR in NHS hospitals.
